Angulo World Exclusive
27.04.09 - By: Andrew Buchanan
Angulo announce the dates and location of
the release of the much-anticipated 2010 board range.

Here’s an event to mark down in your diary if you’re
based in and around the Munich area. Angulo boards
have announced that this will be the location of the
very first unveiling of the 2010 board range.

Surftools shop based in Munich will host the event,
which will take place on the 29th of April from 15.00.
In addition to unwrapping the all new boards,
the promo will also feature details
of the Angulo centre in Cabo Verde.

Adding to the occasion, Mr Angulo will be on hand
to talk about all things Angulo,
as well as offer his thoughts on the 2009 PWA World Tour.

Not to be missed, they’ll also be a chance to check out
the brand new Angulo t-shirt range, again, a world exclusive.

Slalom 63 - PWA madness or stroke of genius?
http://g-42.blogspot.com/2008/02/slalom ... ke-of.html

Josh Angulo has a great presentation about
his new windsurfing boards.

He is explaining three main concepts which
make these boards different
from other slalom boards on the market.

The boards are developed by Josh Angulo and Jean Bouldoires.

Three models will be released with a width of 60, 72 and 83 cm.

Obviously these designs are focused on the new slalom 63 formula

that will be used in the PWA World tour slalom discipline.

Riders are allowed to register only 3 boards and 6 sails
for the whole season
instead
of 2 boards and 4 sails for each event.

Three main concepts make the Angulo Magnum boards unique:

Reduced Tail Area (RTA)

The tail has a bigger, gradual cut out more up to the rail.

Because of the RTA the board will have:

A better consistent release of water of the tail.

No unwanted lift as seen with they older style cut outs
Improved riding through chop, with more grip and a smoother feel.

The boards can still have the width to get planing in an early stage.

This is very important during a race.

In general, wider boards start planing earlier than slimmer boards.

But when the boards get to wide, the board will become slow or the handling will be decreased.

When you are planing over the water,
the tail is the only area of the board in contact with the water.

Cut outs in the boards reduce the surface in the water
and make the boards faster because
there is less resistance (in theory :)).

Εικόνα

Reduced Nose Area (RNA)
the RNA looks kind of strange compared to
other boards but it has a purpose.
The RNA will make the boards:

Less vulnerable for wind lift because there is
little surface to get grip on.

Less vulnerable for chop and small side waves.

Starboard is also trying to fix this problem by reducing
the thickness of the nose.

Extended water line

The extended water line introduces the these advantages:

better planing in the beginning and this
feature will give you more acceleration

It will improve the planing through wind holes and gust.

The extended water line will go hand in hand with the RNA.

In the earlier years light wind boards were very long
and slim boards like the F2 Thommen 305.

These boards worked really well with light winds
but when the wind became stronger the handling
decreased (and because of that, the speed).

In my opinion Angulo is answering common design
problems and creates nice compromises with these concept.

We will have to see how good they work in the PWA World Tour.

They look nice indeed. I am especially interested in the nose. That looks quite different compared to other boards. Is that to reduce the airdraft along the nose? To get less uplift because of the reduced surface?
*
Josh Angulo says:
January 29, 2009 at 10:45 pm

Maarten , Yes the narrow nose is to allow for less uplift because of the reduced area as well as reducing the nose getting caught in any side waves or weird chop situations. Having the nose there also keeps a longer waterline on the bottom of the board which makes for better glide through gusty wind and quicker acceleration out of the jibes , in part , due to that longer waterline. I meant to film some video on the boards today, but got caught up in meetings all day for the World Cup here in Sal. I did get out late yesterday afternoon on the 83 wide and I am very very pleased with the performance and I am confident that anybody that gets one of the limited edition Magnums will be very pleased as well. More info coming soon.

Magnum

After one season back doing the PWA slalom, we have been able to do some intense R&D and have come up with some amazing prototypes... We are extremely proud to introduce for 2009 the solid racing machines that will catapult that Angulo brand into the upper echelon of racing for many years to come.

Our limited edition full Carbon CNC construction and shape will be precise to the millimeter due to each board being produced by 3D copy on CNC. Our exclusive RTA (reduced tail area) and RNA (reduced nose area) designs allow these boards to reach maximum speed without compromising the easy planing features that comes from our width outline groove that is unmatched by any. Our unique cutouts on the tail (RTA) allow for the wider boards to sit even and steady in the water and the board never maxes out, you can always push harder! The combo, of outline, rocker, width, rolly rails with RTA and RNA makes these boards the easiest jibing boards on the market. Our exclusive range which covers all sailor and wind ranges comes in 250 x 60, 250 x 72, and 250 x 83. The wider boards with the RTA gives such a huge range it's unbelievable.

These limited edition boards are sure to be the board that takes the world by surprise in 2009.

The Magnums were actually born some years back.
These are designs that jean Bouldoires has been working on for quite some time and from what I understand the RTA ( reduced tail area) has already been integrated by Jean into the RS-X olympic designs. What we found with the RTA is that it is a much more consistent elimination of wet surface area that is not just a big hack out of the tail of your board, better known on todays market as " cutaways".

We found that the current " cutaway " trend , yes it did eliminate wet surface and allowed the wider board that smaller board feeling but also made the boards "lift" in a more uncontrolled fashion. The RTA of the magnums allows for such a clean release of water that the boards have no out of control or weird lift sensation. Of course Jean was meticulous with his bottom shape and he has a technique to achieve a " shape control" that I haven't seen used by other shapers. This allowed us to make the smalest changes in our prototypes and know exactly why and where the changes were being made.

Our bottom shape sits the board low on the water, yet with a slippery feeling that feels like you can keep pushing harder and faster. The RNA ( reduced Nose area) came about from wanting to accomplish 2 things:

A. We wanted to keep a longer board to have a more extended waterline which gets you easier on a plane as well as glides through the holes better .

B. WE didn't want to have a lot of swing weight way up there or a big nose that was going to get lifted by the wind.. thus with the RNA we accomplished what we set out to do.

Finally 2 more points that pushed me over the edge to come on the market with what I am confident will be the surprise board of the year is it's perfect foam distribution which makes for a very balanced ride when you are just standing on the board and the easy rails which give the boards such good grip in and out of the jibes.

We have made a very limited line of these.

They will be PWA registered
and I am basically looking for International Opinion leaders and we will do our best to get you a board wherever you are in the world.

Every board is CNC shaped to exact specs at the Cobra CNC department, guaranteeing precise measurments and built in the highest level of Carbon construction available today.

WJ : Why did you decide to launch 3 slalom boards "only" when others brands purpose 5 or 6 models for this program?

JA : The new PWA rule allows for competitors to compete on 3 boards. We designed 3 boards to cover all the wind range and different conditions around the world. Our boards all have a very big range and our exclusive RTA (reduced tail area) concept allows for a huge amount of control while riding a slightly wider board. For example, last year I rode a 54 cm in Pozo. This year I will be on 60 cm. But the tail width is about the same as the 54cm due to our exclusive RTA system and this allows the sailor to have control of a smaller board without sacrificing the width necessary for jibing, early planing out of holes etc etc. Our 3 board range will cover the same conditions as 5 or 6 models of the other brands, allowing customers and pros alike to be able to have a complete quiver without having as many boards.

WJ : The nose of Magnum boards with the RNA concept (reduced nose area) is very innovative and strange in the same time... How come this idea ?

JA : This is an idea that we did many years ago on our waveboards an it worked really well in negotiating critical situations on the wave. With the slalom boards, this was reintroduced now by Jean Bouldoires, who designed and perfected our new Magnum range... The proven theory on the slalom boards is that the RNA ( reduced nose area) allows the nose to avoid sticking in any chop and at the same time eliminates un-wanted nose lift in windy conditions. Te reason we maintain the longer board is to have maximum waterline while getting onto a plane and for gliding through the holes. The longer waterline on the bottom of the board facilitates that.

WJ : Do you think people can be "afraid" by this "radical" and innovative outline?

JA : People can be afraid of many things in life .....death, taxes, aids, big waves..... but no need to be afraid of radical and innovative design. The Angulo family has for years been on the forefront of new and exciting designs. Now with the addition of Jean to our R&D team, we are even more radical and innovative. The Bouldoires family is like the Angulo's of Europe.
