BORN: Rather unexpectedly, as this 6.5 no-cam edition from David Ezzy goes against his longstanding support of camber sails for free-riding.

BUZZ: Low-end power, stable and fast with wave-sail durability.

OUR TEST: A favourite, largely for its camber-like power, which offered ample juice for all sailor sizes, and for gliding through monster lulls. Its draft-forward design felt "race-sail stable" according to several testers, who remarked that its speed was impressive considering the sail's light, easy-riding, forgiving nature. By far the friendliest sail to rig and tune, thanks to its brilliantly conceived guides.

CAVEATS: Nothing glaring.
When comparing it to the Sailworks Hucker 6.6, most testers found the Ezzy lighter in hand, and said its power sensation was more relaxed for cruise-control riding.

WHO WINS: Any free-riders, flat-water blasters, and people who want a hassle-free, quick-rigging, powerful 6.5 that's tough.

Ezzy Freeride 6.5 no-cam edition
Interview with designer David Ezzy

David, you've been a rather staunch camber advocate for free-ride sails for 20 years. What changed? Were there any breakthroughs or discoveries during the Freeride no-cam edition's creation?

I've always felt that cambers offered superior stability and power. The reeride sails I tried to make in the past were too flat which made them gutless and unstable. My new Freeride has a profile that mimics a cam.

How did you go about generating low-end power out of a camless sail? Do you feel this sail lets riders rig small?

Power comes from having a deep, forward profile and the right twist. The Freeride can be totally bagged out, yet is still fun to sail. For sure you can rig smaller with it, maybe by .5 square meter.

The Endo-batten system – you created it, and have been using it in Ezzy sails for 9 years. Does its design afford you certain advantages in creating a powerful camless sail?

Yes. The Endo-batten sandwiches the batten so that the batten has even pressure on both sides. This allows the batten to rotate easier while supporting a deeper draft.

What are you most proud of about this sail? I am most proud of the workmanship that our people in Sri Lanka put into each and every sail.

Do you feel the sail has any shortcomings? As you look toward a '08 model, what will you focus on improving?

The current Freeride is a 2008 model. I'm sure the 2009 model is going to be better, but it is too early for me to say what exactly will be changed.
